Colonial Advertisement
• Create an advertisement for a colony of your choosing. You are a representative of one of the 13 English colonies. Your job is to try to get as many people as you can to settle in that specific colony in order for it to become successful. What are some positive traits and characteristics that you can focus? What type of jobs would people have? These are jobs that might possible make them wealthy? Remember, your job is to embellish facts in order to persuade and encourage people to live there (example: Do not say that the southern colonies are ‘hot and humid’. Instead, say ‘warm and sunny’) Be enthusiastic and have fun with it! Use your research and use real facts! Follow sample shown in class

USE RUBRIC TO HELP YOU

Virginia, A Grand World Away
Tired of cold, dark, gloomy England? Would you like to start a new life with your family far, far away? Then come to Virginia, where it’s always warm and beautiful. Our capital city Jamestown, founded in 1607, is the first permanent and highly successful colony.
Enjoy a fresh start as a farmer. Here you can start a lucrative business in the farming industry. Tobacco and other cash crops flourish in the warm and sunny climate of the southern colonies. You can grow almost anything AND sell it for profits. You can even meet John Rolfe who will gladly teach you how to start your own farm.
Virginia is also conveniently located near the Atlantic Ocean and James River. If you’re missing your family in England, you can visit them anytime with our many seaports at your disposal. Ships are always ready to set sail from the Chesapeake Bay. You can easily have your crops exported out of the New World and into the Old World (maybe into the homes of your family in England).
Need help with chores? Here you will find plenty of indentured servants and slaves who are more than happy to serve your every need. Indentured servants, who are here from England, need to pay off their debt so they will be practically lining up to become your household servants. In addition, there are friendly native Americans who live nearby. The Powhatan tribe members are always ready to lend a hand and offer protection from other hostile natives.
Still unsure? Think no more! You will be creating great investments into the future of your family. Imagine all the opportunities that await you here. Come to the Virginia Colony, a grand world away!!

Answer the questions below using information provided in the chart and from your knowledge of social studies.

The rivalry between Spain and Portugal in the fifteenth century was based on each country’s desire to dominate the valuable spice trade. Use the chart below to answer the questions.

Spain: King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella
- answered Columbus’ plea for support
- sought a direct route to India
- mainly interested in natural resources and settlements
- signed Treaty of Tordesillas that set bounds on each country’s colonial expansion

Portugal: King John II
- rebuffed Columbus’ plea for support
- already controlled some routes to India, including one along the African coast
- mainly interested in trade
- signed Treaty of Tordesillas that set bounds on each country’s colonial expansion

1) Which country was interested in colonizing the Americas? Which point on the chart led you to believe this?

2) What country was the destination of the trade route?

702 and 731:

Go to the PBS website for Colonial House. See link below. CHOOSE two interative features under 'Interactive History' (375 years ago at 360 degrees, 1628 Across the Continent, etc..)
Explore each one thoroughly and write a reflection on what fascinated you the most about 17th century colonies in North America) Remember, give details and prove that you went to the website! What did you learn? Do you have any questions about what you saw?

(example - I explored the feature entitled 1628 Across the Continent. In this part of the website, I was able to view different angles of the colony the particpants lived on. It was surprising to see how small colonies were when they first started out.....)

HAPPY HALLOWEEN
For Monday, bring in entire poster presentation and independent journal entries.
Recap: Topics are below:

Journal Entry #1
WHO is my person? What is his/her personality like? Where was he born? Where did he go to school? Who may have influenced his nautical career? How do people treat him/her? How does he/she treat people? This is early in the explorer’s career. Based on your imaginary's person's perspective, you are introducing your explorer.USE ACCURATE DATES! THAT"S WHY YOU HAD TO COMPLETE RESEARCH

Journal Entry #2: Explain what is going on in your country during this time period. You can mention Christopher Columbus or any other explorer and talk about how their journeys are influencing your expedition. Make sure that your story is chronological. At this point, you might be at sea already and are reminiscing about What is going on in Europe (Also, use this as an opportunity to talk about life at sea. How are you feeling? Restless? Still excited? Or gloomy? You may not mention much About your explorer. Focus on the PLACE, the WHERE)Mention some names that you learned.

Journal Entry #3
Task: You are sitting down with the explorer himself. (Make up a situation. You might still be on the ship). He is explaining to you WHY he is leading this particular voyage. Be sure to mention the explorer’s reasons and not just the country’s reasons (the one that he is sponsored by). If you are the explorer himself, then imagine that you are having a conversation with a crew member and are reflecting on your own reasons.

702 Entry #4: When were some important events, milestones, or accomplishments that occurred in this explorer’s life? PICK ONE event to write about. (example: When Christopher Columbus's crew first sighted land on October 12, 1492). Pretend that you experienced it. What happened? How did you feel?

731 Entry #4:What were some encounters that your explorer had? What were some difficulties? (example: When Columbus realized that the Native Americans he encountered did not possess the riches he desired).

Entry #5 (702):What were some difficulties your explorer faced? Choose one to write about. How did he react to this?(i.e., Eric Lopez describes how Columbus encountered ‘Indians’ in the Caribbean. He mistakenly believes that they are from India and find out that they do not carry the riches they are searching for…)

Entry #5 (731):When were some important milestones/accomplishments or significant events in your explorer's life during the Age of Exploration (What were they?) Use one for your journal entry.

Journal entry #6 (Last one!)
How did his/her actions impact or change the Americas? (In can be years in the future and you are reflecting back, you could even be a ghost in the 21st century and you are noticing the how your person influenced the growth of the United States). Remember to keep the flow! You can also explain what happened to your explorer (what happened to him, how he died, etc.)

Journal entry #6 (Last one!) REMEMBER EVERYTHING IS DUE ON MONDAY
How did his/her actions impact or change the Americas? (In can be years in the future and you are reflecting back, you could even be a ghost in the 21st century and you are noticing the how your person influenced the growth of the United States). Remember to keep the flow! You can also explain what happened to your explorer (what happened to him, how he died, etc.)

See below:

November 2008
Time ticks by slowly in the afterlife. I have been deceased for a few hundred years (give or take a couple of decades). I died in 1493 when one of the captives that Columbus had taken tried to escape. A violent scuffle resulted on the Santa Maria which then caused me to fall overboard. I had a brief but agonizing death. Nevertheless, it’s almost as if I never left the voyage or any of Columbus’ other voyages for that matter. I watched as he captured hundreds more natives from this new land (which he kept on insisting was Asia) and brought them back to Spain. I watched as the King and Queen reacted in horror when they realized what he had done. I even bowed my head in shame as he arrived back to Europe in chains for allowing things to get out of control in Hispaniola (many natives there resented the settlement that he created and rebelled). In any case, the New World (once people realized it really was a new world) is now vastly different. Because of Columbus, many of the early natives in the Americas were either killed, captured, or died from diseases. I watched as Europeans (Dutch, Spanish, British, Portuguese, and French) flocked to this New World. Entire nations formed on this land that was once inhabited by tribes and civilizations long gone. Strange, this is not like how I remembered the New World to be…
I wonder what would have happened if he had never set foot in this land called the Americas ....

702: HW - Start working on journal entry #3

Work on getting images and pictures. Work on journal entry #3 tonight. We will start putting the presentation together on Friday as a GROUP. Bring in markers, oak tag (large), and glue on Friday.

Checklist for Group Presentation
1) At LEAST 6 images that connect to your historical person and topic (1 per topic, example, a portrait of Hernan Cortes for ‘Who’)
2) DETAILED explanations/captions/descriptions that go with images AND topics. (Large index cards will be given out to you for this). Use questions for each topic.
3) Each member’s contribution in speaking, brainstorming, and research.
4) Headline or Title at top
You must make sure that your presentation meets all the criteria.

October 21

Finish journal entry 2. Group work begins on Thursday (For Thursday, bring in images or pictures that you feel relate to each topic). Bring in ONE large piece of oak tag (due by Friday) for EACH group.

Task for Journal Entry #2: Explain what is going on in your country during this time period. Restless? Sample:
•Ship log of Eric Lopez September 10, 1492
We’ve been at sea for more than a month now and the rocky waters of the •Atlantic Ocean are not getting calmer. Several times a day, men have called out claiming
to see monsters or serpents tossing around in the sea. However, each time I looked out,
• I only viewed the endless blue waters of the sea.
• Seasickness aside, I’m fortunate that my job as a cook keeps me busy below deck.
• It gives me plenty of time to think and keeps me away from most of the other sailors
•(who appear to be very shady and questionable individuals)
•“Ten barrels of rum left, 20 blocks of cheese, and a couple dozen loaves of hard bread,” I
•mumbled to myself as I quickly recounted our inventory. If we don’t reach land soon, I’ll be
•forced to send a harpoon out myself to catch fish for the crew. Hmm, we should have reached
•Asia by now. Where is Mr. Columbus taking us?
• Suddenly, I felt a strong desire to go home. The bustling and immensely
•crowded city of Madrid seemed very inviting to me now. After the reunification of Spanish lands,
• life became, well, livelier. All of a sudden, our proud country wished to prove itself to its rivals.
• Many nations have been following Portugal’s lead and are starting to send ships out to explore
•beyond our known world. Experts such as Prince Henry the Navigator claim that the world is not flat but round!
• What better way for Spain to prove its power than to send fleets of ships to discover new routes to unfound riches. New technology and more advanced navigation tools
•should see to that.
• Yet, the desire for all this glory is starting to fade for me. All the wealth in the world cannot replace the longing in my heart to go home. Where the heck are we going?

October 20

Second entry will be done in class on Tuesday. Continue to bring in research. For HW tonight, make sure revision for 1st entry is complete. Group work begins on Wed (For Wed, bring in images or pictures that you feel relate to each topic). Bring in ONE large piece of oak tag (due by Friday)

Friday, October 17, 2008

October 17

First ENTRY due on Monday. WHO is my person? What is his/her personality like? Where was he born? Where did he go to school? Who may have influenced his nautical career? How do people treat him/her? How does he/she treat people? This is early in the explorer’s career. Based on your imaginary's person's perspective, you are introducing your explorer.
USE ACCURATE DATES! THAT"S WHY YOU HAD TO COMPLETE RESEARCH

Sample: (Ship log of Eric Lopez, cook for Christopher Columbus)

August 3 1492
The sun shines brightly on this hot and humid day in Spain. My heart is pounding. I raced up the stairs to the pier. Can you imagine? Me, a sailor?!? (Well. I’m actually a cook, but I will take on many other ship duties onboard). I cannot imagine the things I will do and see!
We will set sail with an Italian from Genoa named Christopher Columbus Although his expectations are high and lofty, I trust that he’ll get us to our destination safely. Mr. Columbus is a very knowledgeable man in the ways of seafaring. He has been sailing abroad since he was a young boy and I heard that he is quite skilled in navigating treacherous seas…..

MAJOR ASSIGNMENT #1: GOD, GOLD, AND GLORY!!
The Age of Exploration, Explorer Log
European exploration has deeply impacted the development of the Americas in many ways. From the 1400s and up until the 1600s, explorers from many different European nations traveled the globe in search of new and faster trade routes to the Indies. These unique individuals were lured by a sense of adventure, a strong desire for riches, and in later cases, felt a need to spread Christianity. During their expeditions, many set foot on a new land that was neither Asia, Africa, or Europe. These explorers reached a New World, the continents of North America and South America. Little did they know that their actions would transform the course of humanity.

Task
For this particular assignment, you will be focusing on individual explorers from Europe.
You will be assigned one of these explorers
John Cabot, Giovanni de Verrazano, Ferdinand Magellan, Henry Hudson, Samuel Champlain, Amerigo Vespucci,
Hernan Cortes, Francisco Pizarro

Independent work
a) For the written portion of this assignment, you must write 6 journal entries based on these 6 topics:
1) who your explorer is,
2) where he is from (also what nation he explored for),
3) why did he go on his expeditions,
4) when he began his expeditions,
5) what did he experience and encounter (what is the actual place called now?)
6) how did his journey(s) impact or change the Americas.
You will write this from the viewpoint of the explorer or someone who is traveling with him (a cook, captain, sailor, etc.) Each entry needs to be one page typed, double-spaced (font size 12, Times New Roman or Comic Sans). Examples of this will be given each day when a new topic is assigned (One journal entry will focus on 1 topic).

b) You must complete research for this assignment. A minimum of 5 sources will be accepted ( 2 of which MUST be books). See separate handout on how to write a bibliography.

c) A cover sheet must be turned in with assignment. Be creative! Make it resemble a book, sketch explorer’s portrait, etc. Be sure to include your name, class, date, and name of explorer.

Group Work
This portion will be done in class. Students who share an explorer will work together on creating a poster presentation on who their explorer is, where he is from (also what nation he explored for, why did he go on his expeditions, when he began his expeditions, what did he experience and encounter, and how did his journey(s) impact or change the Americas.

For this presentation, you must include 6 images that connect to the explorer. Each one must represent the topics that were covered. You must EXPLAIN to the class how the image relates to the topic. They can either be drawn or they can be actual paintings or sketches from the time period.

HW: You are living during the Renaissance. Pick one theme (art, technology,
literature, or even education). What are some changes you are seeing in this? How
does this impact you?
(i.e., an artist who used to feel restricted to doing artwork for the church but is able
to express himself more during the Renaissance, an explorer who is about to start a new
Journey trying to discover a new trade route to Asia WITH newer technology). Do this
In your sourcebook (1 page)

Example:
Artist
The sun illuminated my newly finished portrait. I proudly held it up in air. The young man's features were polished and detailed. His deep red jacket hung down his body and shone in the light. Never have I been able to do this! Years ago, the only paintings I completed were for the Church. For a long time, I painted saints and other religious folks. Now, everything is changing. People are starting to express their creativity even more. I find myself sketching beautiful lakes, ordinary people, and buildings....

Hw: 1) A news article reaction due by Monday. Questions will also be on blog.Topic: Vice Presidential Debate- 1 page reflection typed a) What article and source/newspaper did you use? What were some topics mentioned? Describe each candidate’s demeanor (were they nervous, fierce, timid, etc). Who came out as the stronger candidate? See links below for help....

http://www.time.com/time/politics/article/0,8599,1846977,00.html

Sample: The article that I found is "Biden and Palin Square Off" from the newsmagazine Newstime. Senator Joe Biden and Governor Palin argued over many topics during the debate. However, the main issue seemed to be the struggling economy and how many people were losing jobs. Palin's behavior was that of nervousness in the beginning but later on she gatherered more energy, especially when she was talking about this topic. She rallied for working and middle class families and stressed that Sentor McCain and herself would do whatever it takes for people to remain employed. Biden was very restrained during the debate. He did accuse Palin of one time of saying something that wasn't true...

Create a caricature for any person that you’ve learned about so far. Remember to use 7 captions. This time, you can use a picture from a magazine, newspaper, or a drawing of your own. (Use notes and readings given in class to help you). Remember to ask yourselves: What is he/she smelling? seeing? feeling? hearing? sensing? wondering, etc. See example below....

Viking mother from Vinland

She is smelling the brisk fresh air of Vinland coast. She lives near the Atlantic Ocean, with her family, for transportation purposes.
She is feeling tired because her family had just settled in Vinland around the year 1000. Already there is much farm work to do!
She is hearing the hum of her weaving loom mixed in with the joyful shouts of her 3 small children.
She is asking herself, "How long will I stay in this new land? Will the men decide to invade another territory?"
She is wearing a traditional Viking dress, which is adorned with stitchings and embroidery from conquered lands.
She is seeing other thatched roof cottages like hers outside her window. In their small village, there are other families nearby.
She is tasting a small, dark berry found by her youngest daughter. No wonder they call this new place Vinland (Land of Wine or Grapes).

702 and 731

Flowcharts on class assignments must be completed in sourcebooks (first draft) ! Tomorrow, we will put the final draft on display paper. Check previous blog for more research information.

Below is outline of assignment:
Task: Regional Profiles
1) Each pair will be assigned a reading on a place (city, country, U.S. state, etc)
2) Create a flowchart explaining what the geographic factors are in that place (climate, terrain, proximity to water and other natural resources). What are some positive social/economic impacts? What are some negative social/economic impacts? Follow sample shown in class (below)
Materials: You will each be given 3 sheets of white paper, 3 colored sheets in class

EXAMPLE

France

Geographic features
- has a sunny climate in the south, very hot during summers

- high mountains in the north, very cold especially at the border with Germany

- wet, pine forests throughout especially as you go south, very fertile soil especially near the Mediterranean Sea

Positive Economic/Social Impact
- Tourist industry does well due to beaches in south of France (very warm)
Skiing is a popular pastime in the cold, mountainous areas

-Fertile soil in a wet climate allows for an agricultural society(especially olives and grapes). This affects the culture of the French (wine drinking and olive oil as major parts of French cuisine)

-Near the ocean or a large body of water (Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea) so fishing is a major part of French culture and industries. Seafaring and trading are also made easier because of this.

Negative Economic/Social Impacts

- Living near snowcapped mountains may be dangerous (avalanches, landslides, etc.)

- French society is dependent on agriculture. A natural disaster (drought, storms, etc.) can disrupt harvest of important cash crops.
