Below is outline of assignment:
Task: Regional Profiles

2) Create a flowchart explaining what the geographic factors are in that place (climate, terrain, proximity to water and other natural resources). What are some positive social/economic impacts? What are some negative social/economic impacts? Follow sample shown in class (below)
Materials: You will each be given 3 sheets of white paper, 3 colored sheets in class
EXAMPLE
France
Geographic features
- has a sunny climate in the south, very hot during summers
- high mountains in the north, very cold especially at the border with Germany
- wet, pine forests throughout especially as you go south, very fertile soil especially near the Mediterranean Sea
Positive Economic/Social Impact
- Tourist industry does well due to beaches in south of France (very warm)
Skiing is a popular pastime in the cold, mountainous areas
-Fertile soil in a wet climate allows for an agricultural society(especially olives and grapes). This affects the culture of the French (wine drinking and olive oil as major parts of French cuisine)
-Near the ocean or a large body of water (Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea) so fishing is a major part of French culture and industries. Seafaring and trading are also made easier because of this.
Negative Economic/Social Impacts
- Living near snowcapped mountains may be dangerous (avalanches, landslides, etc.)
- French society is dependent on agriculture. A natural disaster (drought, storms, etc.) can disrupt harvest of important cash crops.
